What Is CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

In medical terminology, the word "carpus" describes the two rows of bones that make up the human wrist. The bones closest to the hand form the walls of a conduit that is called the "carpal tunnel." Packed together into this conduit are the median nerve and the tendons and arteries that go to the thumb and fingers. Like all nerves, the median nerve relays signals from the brain to control muscle activity. It also carries information to the brain regarding pain, touch and temperature, information that the brain uses to control bodily functions like sweating and salivation.

How Can You Tell if You Have CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME?

When, due to injury, arthritis, repetitive motion, awkward posturing or no particularly obvious cause, the soft tissue in the wrist becomes inflamed, it pushes against the carpal tunnel and presses against the median nerve. This results in pain, tingling and numbness in the hand and fingers--a condition known as carpal tunnel syndrome.

The most common indications of carpal tunnel syndrome are pain, numbness, and a "pins and needles" tingling in the hand, thumb and first three fingers. An aching tightness or sharp bursts of pain may also radiate up from the wrist into the forearm and/or upper arm and shoulder. People with carpal tunnel syndrome often have difficulty grasping objects and performing detailed tasks with their hands and fingers. Pain and weakness are usually worse at night and upon rising in the morning. In some cases there may be redness, swelling, joint stiffness, muscle tightness and a decrease in the sweating of the palms.

Not everyone with carpal tunnel syndrome experiences the same symptoms to the same degree; but pain is generally the body's first signal that something is wrong. The sooner you acknowledge the early warnings and give your muscles and tendons the rest they require, the more quickly recovery can take place. Without proper attention, a carpal tunnel injury can become longstanding, even irreversible. A competent medical provider can run tests on the wrist(s) to confirm a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome . This will give you a better understanding of the potential reasons for your particular condition.
